We are concentrating on the last 25 years (since the 75th Anniversary)

But - a bit of background.
Athletics Masterton – Harriers turns 100.
On the 23rd May 1912 the Masterton Harrier club held its first official run from Reverend Thompson’s house, the Presbyterian manse, from the corner of Worksop Road and Hessey Street. The first run was held over seven miles (11km) and was followed by a bath and afternoon tea, a tradition that is still maintained today.
In the early years runs were organised on Tuesday nights, Thursday and Saturday afternoons, through the winter months. Today, Athletics Masterton’s harriers run locally every second Sunday all year round as well as travelling to various events around NZ.
Harriers are so named after the sport of harrier racing, a type of hound used for hunting hares which originated back in the 1500’s. In the late 1800’s the sport developed into a pack of harriers and their handlers which ran along behind during the hunt
Over the last 100 years running has proven and remained popular within the Wairarapa and the club has continued in some form ever since, except for breaks during the major war years.
In the 1930’s a second harrier club was formed in Masterton named the Kaitere club, eventually this club merged with the Masterton club. In the year 2000 the Masterton Harrier club merged with the Masterton Athletics and Cycling club to form Athletics Masterton.
The harriers are now 100 years old and today’s members are planning a number of celebration events to commemorate the many thousands of kilometres which have been run by club members before us.
A Centennial dinner and events were
held over Queens Birthday weekend on 2nd to 4th June.
Later in the year further events are planned for Labour weekend 20th
-22nd October.
Committee organisers Gail Edwards and Graeme Butcher are keen to hear from previous members who would like to be involved with our celebration events. You can register your interest by contacting either Gail (06 370 4199) or Graeme (021 456 675) or by e-mailing masterton_harriers@hotmail.co.nz
We celebrated the actual birth date on the closest Sunday by running 100km. This was achieved by the current Harriers running a 1km course from the Sportsbowl Clubrooms until we had covered the 100km.
These were the runners. Most ran more than the 2km needed to achieve the 100km. Chris Blake was the Club Member who crossed the line at the 100th lap
