Surf Club News - October 2002

Welcome to the 2002/2003 surf season from your surf club.  We look forward to providing a service through the summer in keeping with our mission

“To prevent death by drowning at Riversdale Beach through the provision of Lifeguard Services and programmes of public education”

 A Look Back

While we look forward to the new season we would look back at a few of the highlights of the 2001/2002 season …

 *        The attainment of the Surf Award by 8 new active club members.

 *        The re-certification of 18 existing Surf Award holders and the desire to add new skills by some of these members.  Our paid work pay scale refects reward for additional qualifications.

 *        A major rescue by father and son team Jack & Dave Watt who rescued 2 fisherman at the Southern end of the beach.  We mentioned this in our last newsletter but we think it’s worth highlighting their heroic lifesaving efforts again!

 *        The award of Life Membership to the club for Brian Bodle at our Annual General Meeting.  Well done Brian, this is deserved recognition for many years of service and support to lifesaving at Riversdale Beach.

 *        A successful Beach Education Programme co-ordinated by Vicki Molenaar; attended by over 500 Wairarapa primary school children.

 *        The continued fantastic support of sponsors including our local Rate Payers Association and Golf Club.

 *        The continued support of the non-active supporter members.

*        A revitalised “Nippers” programme, with more than 80 children participating over the summer months.  The T-Shirts proved to be very popular, well done to Debbie Taylor and her staff for providing a wonderful educational programme.  This programme is very important to our club; after all it’s the source of future active members

 *        The staging of the Mid Winter Swim over Queens Birthday Weekend.  Again the event was well supported but next year lets see some new faces in the water!  (AJ Dennison for instance!)

 *        400 patrolled beach hours that included 164 preventative actions, attendance to 4 incidents (rescues from the ocean) & 5 first-aid assistances.

 *        The highly successful “Big-Dig” organised by junior members held over Anniversary Weekend.  This is proving to be a wonderful fundraiser, made possible by strong sponsor support.

Membership

Your membership fee helps pay ongoing costs such as power, telephone, rates, insurance, maintenance, postage, stationery and gear replacement.   Can non-active members contact us to obtain your  account for the season as a non-active member.   We have added a space for a donation – thanks to many of you do this anyway. Early payment would be appreciated!

Please note that your subscription does not include the fee for “Nippers” activities.  We apologise for any confusion this may have caused in recent seasons.

 New Committee

 In July the club held its AGM with the following persons elected;

 President:                        Murray Brown

 Chairperson:                   John Bunny

 Patron:                            Brian Bodle

 Club Captain:                  Mike Taylor

 Secretary/Treasurer:        Vicki Molenaar

General Committee:         Josie Watt, Tim Bird, Shirley Dee, Debbie Taylor,
David Booth, Anna Hourigan & Luc Bodle.

The club welcomes the new members David Booth, Anna Hourigan & Luc Bodle, may your time with the club be both industrious and satisfying!

The club acknowledges the significant input of Pip & Bruce Hannon who have filled the Treasury role over a 4 year period.  Your huge input is appreciated; you have done an excellent job for the club.

 Equipment

Your club is now blessed with an excellent range of rescue equipment.  These include 2 IRB Rescue boats (one a complete new package), Rescue Boards, a Rescue Tower plus all the usual smaller items like flags, rescue tubes, hand held radios etc.

We also took delivery of 2 competition surf skis, a joint purchase by Jet Law, Sully Alsop and the club.

Your committee is proud of the position we are in gear wise; we have made significant acquisitions over a 4-year period, it simply means we are in a position to make our beach safer for swimmers.

  Clubhouse

The clubhouse painting was finally finished earlier in the year from its unfinished state, you certainly can’t miss it can you!

As I write, a new kitchen is in the final stages of installation, our new committee member David Booth has kindly donated his labour to carry out the installation; David you are very generous!  The purchase of the new kitchen was made possible by a grant from the Masterton Licensing Trust.

 Summer Training

Our Club Captain Mike Taylor advises that training for new Surf Award trainees and for existing members re-complying for their Surf Award has commenced with training at the Masterton Pool complex on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 3.45pm.  Mike would like to see the Surf Award examination happen on the weekend of 2nd & 3rd November, so get to the pool and get those skills up to date!

Please remember, while a good deal of our qualified members are juniors, the club also welcomes interest from “mature” persons keen to obtain the Surf Award qualification.  Please contact Mike Taylor (he was last years mature qualifier!) on 06 3723700 for any active membership enquiries.

 Lifeguarding

Thanks again to Masterton District Council who have confirmed funds to cover wages for lifeguarding over the coming season.  This will be complimented by a significant number of volunteer hours on the beach.

 The Last Word

The club wishes you and your families a safe swimming season at Riversdale Beach and please remember

 “Swim Between The Flags”

Surf Club News - June 2002

Welcome!

A big welcome to you all again, this time at the winter close of the surf lifesaving season. The management committee wish to thank you for your continued support over the season be it in a supporter, sponsorship or active role within the club, you all played your part in helping us achieve our mission

"To prevent death by drowning at Riversdale Beach through the provision of Lifeguard Services and programmes of public education"

AGM Notice

This newsletter includes the notice of the Annual General Meeting. We urge you to attend the AGM, it’s an ideal opportunity to have your say, discover how the clubs finances are going and to consider nomination for an active role within the club.

Major Rescue

This newsletter can’t be written without mention of a significant rescue at the beach recently. Two fishermen had their boat flip, they were spotted by Rangi Williamson and John Jackson who raised the Surf Alarm at the Southern end of the beach. This rang at the shop that contacted Dave and Jack Watt who were in the water within minutes. Braving a strong tide our father and son team carried out the rescue helping the boaties to shore. Well done, we know you are a modest pair but your efforts need to be highlighted!

Lifeguard Training

Most of the Lifeguards from previous seasons recompiled for their award in December. New recruits Luke McKenna, Chris Dee, Joe Sykes, Robbie Molenaar, Belinda Broughton, Andy Barbour, Joseph Crawford, and Mike Taylor joined the team under the guidance of Sully Alsop, Bob Alsop, Shirley Dee and Jet Law. It was great to see one of the committee Mike Taylor qualify and we think Mike will be the first of many mature citizens to achieve the Surf Award!

IRB’s

The club took delivery over the summer of a sparkling new IRB package (boat, Mercury motor, fuel bladder & trailer). Dave Hickey from Surf Lifesaving New Zealand delivered the deal and spent a good part of the day going over the fine details of operation and care of a new IRB. The new boat was made possible by a grant from Eastern and Central Community Trust and a great trade in deal from Surf Lifesaving New Zealand.

Summer Training

Our Club Captain Shirley Dee advises that Lifeguards should be thinking about training for the coming season. Shirley feels we should be starting training earlier so that our lifeguards are in the best possible condition to save lives, please support her initiatives. It would be great if you were all at the AGM so that Shirley can give her message to you all personally.

Fundraising Evening

In February a very successful evening was held at the Golf Club raising in excess of $1,000. The evening was the initiative of Daryl Moss, Simon Kerr and Rangi Williamson and featured two of New Zealand’s outstanding darts players "Stumpy" Hunt and Neville Moss who gave their time for our club. To you all, the club wishes to thank you for your efforts, we look forward to a similar event next year!

Competition

While we do not have a strong competition focus, a number of our members did successfully complete at Surf Carnivals over the summer. To you all congratulations on being involved and for the results achieved.

New Year

Once again we hosted a fantastic evening at the beach. Great weather, great crowd behaviour, great music and great people! The staging of the event was made possible by thoughtful support from our local council.

Nippers

We’ll mention it again in our next newsletter but we had to tell you all that we had in excess of 80 Nippers involved the activities over the summer! This was a stunning number and bodes well for the recruitment of future senior members.

Dogs, Vehicles & Divers!

The beach is a great place for dogs but please don’t have Fido or Rover running around in the flagged area on the beach. We think there’s plenty of space at the beach for the dogs so please consider others!

Some of may be new to the beach and have an excuse, others of you do not! Please remember that vehicles are not permitted on the beach in front of the houses and nor are they welcome in the dunes.

When diving from a boat, please display a Divers Flag to alert others of your activity, we understand there may have been a close shave over the summer!

Sponsorship

Once again the club enjoyed wonderful support from its sponsors and in particular we would like to thank the following :

Masterton District Council
Masterton Licensing Charitable Trust
Riversdale Beach Rate Payers Association
Langlands Motorcycles
Mitre 10
Eastern and Central Community Trust

Surf Club News - October 2001

Welcome to the 2001/2002 surf season from your surf club. We look forward to providing a service through the summer in keeping with our mission

"To prevent death by drowning at Riversdale Beach through the provision of Lifeguard Services and programmes of public education"

A Look Back

While we look forward to the new season we would like to remind you of a few of the highlights of the 2000/2001 season …

* The attainment of the Surf Award by 5 new club members.

* The re-certification of most of last years successful Surf Award graduates.

* A major rescue over Easter School holidays (after patrols had ceased) by Elliot Bird and Michael Hawthorn saw 5 swimmers rescued who were in some distress well off shore. Recently Jack Watt completed a rescue after a committee meeting, well done lifeguards, you saved lives!

* The successful participation in surf carnivals over the season by some of our members. Highlights included Sully Alsop 2nd in Under 19 Ski & Iron man & Jet Law 3rd in Under 16 Surf Swim in the Wellington Championships.

* The continued fantastic support of sponsors.

* The continued support of the non-active supporter members

* The delivery of a new IRB Mariner motor and the purchase of 2 rescue boards and 2 competition kneeboards.

* The staging of the Mid Winter Swim over Queens Birthday weekend, a new fun event well supported by the Community.

* 730 patrolled beach hours that covered 53 days and involved 131 preventative actions and attendance to 5 incidents (rescues from our ocean)

* The highly successful "Big-Dig" organised by junior members held over Anniversary Weekend. A terrific fundraiser sure to be popular again this summer!

* The permission by the Riversdale Golf Club to place the clubs "Surf Head" on the bar, $150 raised so far, thank you!

Membership

Your membership fee helps pay ongoing costs such as power, telephone, rates, insurance, maintenance, postage, stationery and gear replacement. Kindly contact Tim Bird for membership information.

Please note that your subscription does not include the fee for "Nippers" activities. We apologise for any confusion this may have caused in recent seasons.

New Committee

In July the club held its AGM with the following persons elected;

President/Chairperson: Murray Brown

Patron: Brian Bodle

Club Captain: Shirley Dee

Secretary: Vicki Molenaar

General Committee: Josie Watt, Tim Bird, Pip Hannon, Mike Taylor, John Bunny & Debbie Taylor.

Junior Representatives: Jack Watt, Anthony Molenaar, Elliot Bird, Dale McKenna & Sully Alsop.

The club is ably assisted by Bruce Hannon who with daughter Pip carry out the treasury role within the club.

The club acknowledges the significant input of Bob Alsop and Jenny Inkster our long serving Club Captain and Secretary who are taking a break from an active role in running the club. Bob has indicated that he will still be on the beach saving lives this summer!

IRB’s

Some more great news! Last year we reported the expected delivery of a new motor and this was duly delivered, a new "Mariner". Earlier this year the club received a grant of $10,000 from Eastern & Central Community Trust toward the purchase of a complete new IRB (boat, motor, fuel bladder & trailer) that is worth $23,750. We are pleased to report that Surf Lifesaving New Zealand have agreed to provide the new IRB package in exchange for the $10,000 plus our older IRB and older motor. This represents a great trade-in opportunity to the club so this season we will have 2 complete IRB packages to assist with beach patrols.

Rescue Boards

As we mentioned this time last year, the club has now purchased 2 new Rescue Boards, these are clearly marked and will be highly visible on the beach this summer. The purchase of these boards was made possible from a donation received from the Police Reparation Fund.

Summer Training

Our Club Captain advises that training for new Surf Award trainees and for existing members re-complying for their Surf Award will commence at the Masterton Pool complex from 22 October on Monday and Thursday evenings. This is likely to follow a similar format to last year with 2 nights training at the outdoor pool in Masterton and a Sunday club day training each fortnight at the beach with an examination in December.

Please remember, while a good deal of our qualified members are juniors, the club also welcomes interest from "mature" persons keen to obtain the Surf Award qualification. Please contact Captain Shirley Dee for summer training details on 06 3782921.

We have applied to the Hillary Commission for funds for the purpose of covering all training costs i.e. Pool Hire, travel to Wellington to attend courses and costs associated with qualified coaches coming to the Beach.

Lifeguarding

Thanks to Masterton District Council who have confirmed funds to cover the wages for the coming season. The council has also funded the club to provide entertainment, clean up, first aid etc for the New Years Eve celebrations, the third year the club has facilitated this event at the beach.

The Last Word

The club wishes you and your families a safe swimming season at Riversdale Beach and please remember

"newsletter" May 2000

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our AGM is to be held on Sunday 4th June Queens Birthday weekend at 2.00pm at the Riversdale Beach Golf Club - all welcome please attend!!

WELCOME

Our December newsletter was greeted with considerable enthusiasm. The Committee, Lifeguards, Juniors and Nippers thank those who have given wonderful support to the Club this past season

In our Chairman’s report to the Wellington District Surf Lifesaving AGM, he stated that the:

"season has been everything that was planned for and more. This sounds like a case of - all targets met, all goals achieved and all pigs fed and ready to fly".

As the Club looks back on the 1999/2000 season, there are many achievements that stand out :

9 Surf Lifeguard awards
2 Instructors awards
8 Surf Lifeguards re-certified
9 Emergency Care 1 awards
2 Emergency Care 2 awards

GOALS FOR THE 1999/2000

The club in the December newsletter stated "that our community was entitled to a better service both in quality and quantity". The committee believes that the Club has achieved that aim as follows:

Patrols

71 beach patrols were mounted. That is, there were lifeguards on duty on the beach. This used a total of 644 paid guard hours and 651 volunteer guard hours. While on patrol our lifeguards attended 7 incidents (rescues) and completed 550 preventative actions.

Training

To maintain their fitness and improve skill levels Lifeguards logged 76 hours of training in the IRB’s (Inflatable Rescue Boats) and 46 hours of surf training.

Nippers and Cadets

During the period 28 December - 21 January, a total of 19 days of Nippers (Junior Surf and Water Safety Education) were held. This programme involved a total of paid guard hours and 114 voluntary hours and catered for 97 children culminating with a Nippers day to show parents and friends the skills and confidence that these young people had developed. Jessie Alsop, Susannah Weaver, Jess Wall, Jet Law and Sully Alsop are to be congratulated for a well run and interesting programme.

NEW YEAR

The Club was able to facilitate a very enjoyable occasion through the planning and energy by those who staged the event, which created a wonderful "family atmosphere".

A key measure of the success was the range of ages from pre-schoolers to post teenagers (Grandma and Grandpa?) all dancing and enjoying the festive celebration of New Years Eve. In review, the 1999/2000 celebrations were a public success and provided the community with a template that can be used for such occasions in the future.

COMPETITION

While this has not traditionally been an area of Club strength, a large contingent of active members competed at a Surf Carnival at Lyall Bay on January 16. The team had remarkable success by finishing second on the day. Thanks to Jonathan Alsop for the coaching and management of these junior members and also a big thanks to the McGuniness household for billeting the team on Saturday night.

A smaller contingent of members went to the Wellington Championships, held at Titahi Bay on February 24 with some very good individual results.

At the National Surf Lifesaving Championships Sully Alsop was successful in gaining 3rd U16 Men's Ski Race and recently awarded the title of Wellington Junior Lifeguard of the Year.

CLUBHOUSE

The club has had a big year with the addition of a new gear shed to provide more room for expensive lifesaving equipment and boats. Turning the roof into a hand-railed deck has made the club more habitable by providing more space for club members. The painting was not finished as planned, but will be completed for the 2000/2001 season, the colour scheme is based on the national Surf Lifesaving colours and brightens up the beach front.

BEACH EDUCATION

During the period 25 January - 18 February 2000, a total of 1060 children attended this programme. This programme continues to win the praise and appreciation of children, parents and educators in the Wairarapa.

NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 1999

WELCOME

In normal circumstances a "Club Newsletter" sets out to tell all of its members what's happening in the club, who's achieved what, what events are scheduled to occur and what opportunities exist for members.

While this newsletter sets out to do some of what a "normal" newsletter does, it has a far greater intent, because the Membership of the Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club is in many ways the community of Riversdale, property owners, rural residents, day-trippers, campers and visitors to the beach.

To you all we extend a sincere thank you for your support and encouragement for the projects and activities of the Club. The response to our Supporting Members drive was nothing short of phenomenal.

GOALS FOR THE 1999/2000 SEASON

At the conclusion of the 1998/1999 season it was obvious that the Club had served its community in a minimal way during the summer. Our community had requested and was entitled to a better service both in quality and quantity.

The goals of the Club for the 1999/2000 season can be summarised in just that statement.

LIFEGUARDING

To allow the Club to have a Lifeguard presence on the Beach virtually full time a "Resident Lifeguard" Mr Les Tait has been appointed. This will ensure that from Labour Weekend to Easter there is a lifeguard available to respond to parent requests for a patrol on the beach after school, to provide a rescue service, to act as Patrol Captain for weekend patrols and to ensure that the Club rescue equipment is well maintained.

You will know that the Lifeguard is available when the large RED and YELLOW flag is flying from the Clubhouse.

Since a large number of bach owners take up full time residence with their young children as soon as the Primary School holidays begin, the Club has organised full time patrols form December 20th to January 21st 2000. Therefore expect to see a patrolled area on the beach form 10am to at least 4pm.

Our Lifeguards will be easily recognised in new gear, red shorts, yellow long sleeved shirts or white T-shirts and red hat with the word LIFEGUARD printed on all garments.

These patrols will be a mix of volunteer and paid lifeguards. This extended service has been made possible with the assistance of the Masterton District Council, the Riversdale Rate Payers Association and WINZ.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Before a Lifeguard is allowed to patrol, they must demonstrate annually that they have both the skills and the physical ability to perform a rescue.

To facilitate their training and to offer an opportunity for other young people to become trained lifeguards. Club training nights have been held at the Masterton Recreation Centre since the middle of October.

Riversdale SLSC is probably the most pro active Club in the Wellington district in up skilling their Lifeguards. At a recent Emergency Care (Advanced Resuscitation Course) Riversdale had 8 participants from a total of 16. Les Tait, Chris Marsh, Jack Watt, Anthony Molenaar, Jess Wall, Susanna Weaver, Sullivan Alsop and Bob Alsop (recertified) were all successful. Les Tait and Sullivan Alsop attended a second day and were successful in gaining their Emergency Care 2 qualification.

Attendance at these courses was possible with the assistance from the Hillary Commission.

The Committee wishes to congratulate and acknowledge the dedication of the following active members who on the weekend of the 12 December 1999 attained their Lifeguard Award:

Mark Quinn, Elliot Bird, Mathew Dee, Dylan Law, Jessie Alsop, Mitch Springer, Cody Brown, Zeb Aporo and Jet Law.

Congratulations also go to Sullivan Alsop and Bob Alsop (Club Captain) who at the same time received their Surf Lifeguard Instructors Qualification.

IRB's (Inflatable Rescue Boats)

For a number of reasons the New Zealand SLS has deemed that a person must be 17 before they can be allowed to sit their IRB Drivers award. And to be eligible for this award a candidate must be a holder of the Surf Award.

These rules exist to protect the Club and the Association under the Health & Safety Act 1991. This precluded the Club having its IRB's used by competent Junior club members and by competent local residents.

A large thankyou to John Inkster who has spent considerable time talking to NZ Surf and to potential sponsors and found a way around this problem.

The Riversdale Surf Life Saving Club now has the Riversdale Community Rescue Boat supported by JNL This will allow the Junior club members and competent community people to be instructed and practice their skills.

MOTORBIKE

Thanks to Langlands Motorcycles who have maintained at no cost our Honda 4 wheeler, the Beach will be patrolled regularly by lifeguards and this year thanks to Norwood CB Distributors Ltd the bike will more visible with its flashing light.

Please take note that Club Members are trained to know the Beach, please heed warnings when given, remember it is always safer to swim between the flags.

BEACH EDUCATION

This program has been in operation since November 16th and has 1800 students booked in. There are three instructor/lifeguards - Ben Stevens, Jess Hunt and Bridget Inkster.

The program has large support from Surf Lifesaving NZ, Rural Education Assistance Program (REAP), Powerco, McDonalds, Write Price, Breadcraft and Alpha Plastics.

The Club is well known for its quality Beach Ed program and plenty of positive feedback has been received already this season.

NIPPERS

This program is an extension of the Beach Ed Program and aimed at children from 6-11 years of age. The club wants to teach safety and fun at the beach while developing the water skills of children. Watch out for the start up dates 27 December - 24 January 2000. A cadet program for 13 & 13 year olds will be considered.

To support this program Wellington Surf Life Saving in conjunction with Sport Wellington is organising a series of beach carnivals for Nipper Teams. It is anticipated that we will be able to send teams down to these carnivals. WATCH THIS SPACE for more information.

Sponsors for this program and purchase of new equipment: Masterton Licensing (Charitable) Trust.

CLUBHOUSE

This year the Club has bought to fruition the long intended extensions to increase storage for rescue and training equipment. The additions will create another gear shed, a lockable storage room for club records and Beach Ed material and additions to the upstairs bathroom to include a shower which will make the upstairs portion of the clubrooms fully independent.

The roof above the two gear sheds will be well utilised as a sun deck providing more space upstairs. It is intended to develop this area in the future.

Once all the alterations have been completed the Club Rooms will be repainted but sadly the weather has interfered with the building progress which won't allow the painting to be completed until after the holiday period.

As always these projects don't happen without the support of sponsors. The Club wishes to acknowledge the following:

Eastern & Central Community Trust, NZ Lion Foundation & Mr Clem Griffiths, Mitre 10 Masterton, Oldfields, Progressive Engineering

GUY FAWKES

This is one occasion when the Club can do something for the Community that supports it. Unfortunately the preferred date was washed out. A successful alternative was held on Friday 19th November 1999.

A big thankyou must go to "Handyman", Marcus Percy for his cleaning up of the bonfire remains, which has been long overdue.

NEW YEAR

The Riversdale Surf Life Saving Club, along with every other emergency service in the country has no idea what to expect on New Years Eve and on New Years Day. All that can be stated is that the Club Management Committee is aware of the potential for concerns to become a reality and therefore have made plans for our Qualified Members to assist the local emergency agencies (Ambulance, Fire, District Council).

MEMBERSHIP

An Annual Membership card that covers the year beginning 1/10/99 is now available thanks to Greenlees Print who very generously sponsored these and the membership flier.

During the summer, if you are passing the Club House please feel free to come in and visit, try the new verandah and make yourself known to us and remember,

"SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS"

Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy New Year.
